I consider a point of intersection between inner and outer worlds. Grasping onto this transitory state, I find ways to describe and give it form.
I feel a deep connection with the landscape and draw inspiration from the seasonal changes I observe along the riverbed, hills and forests where I walk, the seascape where I swim and from memories of childhood in rural Ireland.
LINE DRAWINGS
Drawing is an essential part of my work. It is where I begin to think and process and formulate ideas. There are two ways I love to make initial drawings. One is making large expressive drawings with charcoal or large brushes. For these I use gestural lines and enjoy getting physically engaged in the composition. And then I make smaller, more intimate drawings where I am very intentional about how I describe the different qualities of the line...
TONAL DRAWINGS AND PAINTINGS
Tonal drawings with charcoal, pastels and graphite sticks depict softer forms. These drawings correlate with my paintings because they (help me remove details and) simplify the subject so it becomes more ambiguous and open-ended.
THE SCULPTURES grow out from the drawing and painting process
I create and recreate a composition repetitively; letting it appear in an impulsive way at first, then pulling it apart and playing with ways to reconstruct it. I paint on top of drawings and draw with paint brushes. I cut up work on paper and canvas so I can recreate the forms in 3 dimensions and I use painted surfaces to create temporary wall drawings. Blurring the distinction between painting and sculpture.
This ongoing process of taking in, responding and reconstructing is like a conversation that develops over time. A conversation with line, colours, myself and the landscape.
